I feel extremely happy to join with you all on the joyous occasion of our great Nation's 72nd Independence Day celebration. Indeed, after assuming additional charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of this vibrant Company, this is my maiden address to NLCIL family and public. At this moment, I gratefully remember all the ex-employees including Directors and CMDs of our 62 years old Company for their valuable contributions. Because of their tireless efforts only, our Company has grown to the present status.

This day fills hearts of every Indian with immense joy and sense of utmost pride in hoisting our National Flag and seeing the Tri-colour soaring in the wind high up. On this occasion, let us recall the sufferings, struggles and sacrifices of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhiji and other National leaders as well as all freedom fighters.

The 'Make in India' initiative is transforming India into a hub for design, innovation and manufacturing. The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' focuses on making India a clean and an 'open defecation free' Nation. While 'Skill India initiative' aims to provide the Indian workforce with the required skill sets and knowledge to enable them to contribute substantially towards the economic growth of India, 'Startup India Initiative' will lead the way to make India a Nation of job creators instead of job seekers. The '24x7 - Power for all' aims to provide 24x7 power supply across the country by 2019.

We, at NLCIL, have a grand vision for ourselves to become a Leading Mining and Power Generating Company with Social responsiveness accelerating Nation's growth. In order to realise this vision, we have formulated an ambitious corporate plan by enhancing our capacity in mining to 93.15 MTPA and power generation to 21011 MW by 2025 with mix of energy portfolio of Lignite, Coal and Renewables.

I take this opportunity to share with you the performance of our Company during the year 2017-18.

  • 236 MW of capacity was added to the already available capacity of 55 MW in the renewable energy sector.
  • All the Mines put together had produced 251.53 LT (Lakh Tonne) of lignite and the total power generation was 20740.84 MU (Million Units).

As part of a new business initiative to increase our revenue, NLCIL entered into Trading of Un-requisitioned Surplus Power (URS Power) through NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam limited in the year 2016 and earned Rs.134 Cr in the year 2016-17 and Rs.294 Cr in 2017-18. Now NLCIL enters into the Power Trading market as an Independent Accredited Power Trader in the Country with Category I Licence obtained from Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). NLCIL can trade its own URS power as well as procure and trade power from other Power Generating Companies bilaterally in Power market. The merit order rating of our power stations has improved on account of reduction in energy charge rate (ECR) consequent to optimisation of cost.

During the financial year 2017-18, Sales turn over stood at Rs.8496.20 Crore and Profit Before Tax (PBT) and Profit After Tax (PAT) were Rs. 2,689.70 Crore and Rs.1,848.78 Crore respectively.
