Township of NLC - Education


NLC is having a separate Sports Control Board to promote sports activities in NLC. NLC Sports control Board had carried out various sports activities through the year for the development of sports among NLC Personnel and Neyveli School Students.

I. Conduct of Tournaments

NLC Sports Control Board had organized many tournaments during the year 2003-04.The tournaments were conducted in different disciplines for various categories people in Neyveli as under.

•  Inter Unit tournament.
•  Inter School tournaments.
•  Teachers Sports Meet.

Besides above, coaches from Sports Control Board also helped in conducting and officiating the following events.

•  Apprentices Athletic meet at Bharathi Stadium.
•  WIPS Sports Meet at Bharathi Stadium.
•  Pongal Sports at Bharathi Stadium.
•  LCC Swimming Meet at Swimming Pool

I (a). Inter Unit tournaments.

Sports and Games meet for NLC personnel were conducted between the various units of NLC.

I (b). Inter School Tournaments.

Sports and Games meet among the students from various schools in Neyveli were conducted during the year.

NLC Sports Control Board had organized Sports Coaching camps for Neyveli School students. The camps were conducted during the Annual, Quarterly and Half yearly school holidays.

The Annual Sports Camp for school students which began in Summer Holidays was conducted in two phases for a duration of 20days each.

The camps aimed at creating Sports awareness among our School Students also helped them to spend their Holidays in a useful manner.

III Assistance to NLC Personnel / Neyveli students for Sports participation.

NLC personnel had been sent to important Sports meets during the year 03-04.

•  Inter District Football Tournament held at Kothagiri.
•  National B Chess Championship held at Nagpur.
•  National Tug of War Championship held at Ranchi.
•  All India Public Sector Cricket Tournament held at New Delhi.
•  State Veteran Athletic Championship held at Chennai
•  All India Public Sector Shuttle Badmninton Tournament held at Goa
•  National Veteran Athletic Championship held at Imphal & Hyderabad

Neyveli students were provided opportunity to participate in various tournaments held all over India. Students who showed keen interest & Skill in the Sports/Game were selected and sent for tournaments. This had been helping the students to gain valuable experience and exposure at State and National level competitions.


1. Several medals from prestigious National Championships / tournaments were won by Neyveli School Students. The details are as under:

•  Inter Zonal (National) Junior Athletic Championship at Bhopal- one Gold, one Bronze.

•  SGFI National Basketball Championship at Chennai- one Bronze.

•  Junior National Aquatic Championship at New Delhi- Five Gold, Four Silver and Two Bronze.

•  CBSE National Aquatic Championship at Chennai-15Gold, 17 Silver and 13 Bronze

•  All India Inter School Yoga Championship at Ranchi -Four Gold, Four Silver, and Four Bronze.

•  International Yoga Festival at Pondicherry-Championship was claimed in both boys and Girls category.

•  Mini National (Under 13) Volleyball championship at Bangalore one Silver.

•  National Sub-Junior Volleyball Championship at Tandur (A.P)- one Silver.

2.  From Jawahar school (CBSE ), a girl had been selected as a probable for the Indian women Football team, while a boy emerged as the fastest swimmer in our country in 50 metres Free Style in his age category (U-14).

3. 12 students had received Scholarships from Sports Authority of India for their meritorious achievements in Swimming. Four students had secured admission into Professional Courses in reputed Universities under Sports Quota.

4. Neyveli Students also claimed many laurels at state level Competitions in almost all disciplines. The achievements of Neyveli School students were well recognized and cash Awards as per norms were extended.

5. NLC Personnel won Nine Gold, Five Silver and Two Bronze medals in the National Veteran Athletic Championship held at Hyderabad.

6.  NLC Tug of War Team finished third in the National Tug of War Championship held at Ranchi.

V Assistance to Neyveli based Clubs and Cultural Association for their activities.

1. Financial assistance to Clubs patronized by NLC are extended for conducting Sports events. The following events were conducted at Neyveli during the year 2003-04.

•  District Chess Championship organized by Cuddalore District Chess Association

•  District Football League Tournament organized by Cuddalore District Football Association

•  State Ranking Tennis Tournament organized by Lignite City club.

•  Nagarajan Memorial Aquatic Meet organized by District Aquatic Association

•  State Rapid Chess tournament organized by (CDFA)

•  Cultural Associations in Neyveli were encouraged by NLC by extending a uniform Financial Assistance of Rs. 2500/-This had been provided to promote cultural activities and to preserve our tradition. Cultural Associations were also given facilities to present their performances during the Official NLC Functions.


As per the guidelines given by the Ministry/Govt. Dept., certain activities / functions are celebrated / observed for creating awareness.

(i) National Technology Day Celebration

National Technology Day Celebrations was conducted at Training Complex on 11.05.2003. In this connection, Oratorical competition and Essay writing competition was conducted for Executives, supervisors, staff and workers.

(ii) Hindi Fortnight

From September 14 th to 27 th , Hindi Fortnight was celebrated. Shri Gagandeep Singh Bedi, District Collector was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function, conducted on 14 th September 2003.

Several competitions such as word competition , poem writing, slogan writing, Essay competitions were held on different dates during the fortnight for employees. Valedictory function was celebrated at Power Station Training Centre on 27.09.03 at 4.30 p.m. and our CMD was the Chief Guest and prizes were distributed to the winners by him.

(iii) Vigilance Awareness Week

Vigilance Awareness week was observed from 3.11.03 to 8.11.03.On 3.11.03, the Inaugural function of the Vigilance Awareness Week was conducted and it was presided over by the Director/Personnel. Our CMD was the Chief Guest and it was felicitated by Director/Mines, Director/Power, Director/Finance and Director/P&P.

On 4.11.03, a special lecture was delivered by Dr. (Smt) Nagabhushanam, Former Vice Chancellor, Dr. Ambedkar Law University on the Topic "Honesty & Integrity - Eyes of Anti-corruption from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.. On 5.11.03, the third day, a special lecture was delivered by His Holiness Swamy Sarvarupananda Maharaj on the topic "Ethical Management - A Need for sustained Growth from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. On 6.11.03, a special lecture was arranged on the topic "Self Discipline - Need of the Hour" and it was delivered by Dr. N. Jayasankaran, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Chandarasekarandra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya, Kancheepuram from 10.30 a.m to 12.30 p.m. On the same day, from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Shri T.K.G. Iyer, Former GM, Instrumentation India Ltd, delivered a lecture on "Realigning Nation against Corruption.

On 7.11.03, a special lecture was delivered on the Topic "Comparison increases Corruption, Contentment reduces Corruption" by Shri K. Soundarraj, President, NIPM South Zone. On 8.11.03, from 11.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., Swami Suddhanandha delivered a lecture on "Self Awareness".

On the same day at 4.00 p.m. the valedictory function was arranged. Shri A.K. Bhatnagar, Vice-Chancellor, Pondicherry University was the Chief Guest. Shri N.K. Ghosh, Director, Central Vigilance Commission was the Guest of Honour . The function was presided over by our Chairman-Cum-Managing Director Shri S. Jayaraman. A book "Ethics Management for Eternal Vigilance" was released by our CMD and the first copy of the book was received by Shri V. Narayanan, IGP & CVO. The function was felicitated by all our Directors.

In connection with the Vigilance Awareness Week, oratorical, essay and slogan competitions were held at Training Complex during that week for school/college students, workers & staff and executives. The prizes were given to the winners during the valedictory function.

(iv) Energy Conservation Week Celebration

Energy Conservation week was observed from 14.12.03 to 20.12.03 and during the week Tips & Suggestions on Energy Conservation and Oratorical competition was held.

(v) Oil Conservation Fortnight Celebration

Oil Conservation fortnight was observed from 17.01.04 to 31.01.04 . As a part of the fortnight, Oratorical Competition for all employees and Apprentices were held on 21.01.04, and prizes were distributed to the winners during the valedictory function held on 31.01.04.

(vi) Productivity Fortnight

Productivity Fortnight was observed from February 12 th to 25 th . On 12.02.04, the inaugural function was celebrated and it was observed as Productivity Day . A special lecture by Shri K.T. Chandramohan, ISO 9000 Lead Auditor, New Delhi, on the topic "Innovative Techniques to Trigger Productivity & Growth through ISO 9000" was organised on the Productivity Day at Training Complex, covering 64 employees.

A training programme in connection with the Productivity fortnight was conducted on 21.02.04 on the topic "Productivity through Creativity". As a part of the Fortnight, several competitions such as Essay, Slogan, Poem and Painting competitions were conducted for all levels of employees. The valedictory function was held on 25.02.04 at 3 p.m. at Training complex. and prizes were given to the winners during the function.
